Pathway to Discovery - Casestudy

"Pathway to Discovery was born from a realisation of the need for individuals living through personal difficulties as a result of a personality disorder to share their experiences."

A book containing their thoughts, art and poetry was created. (Literacy & numeracy support was embedded into the process of creating this book with the support of the LSIS SfL Support Programme.)

share a Quick Reads inspired resource.

”The ‘Chickenfeed’ web quest has been designed to be used by adult literacy learners, who voted the book as their favourite from the Quick Reads’ series.” The web quest provides a range of activities and can be used for literacy levels Entry 3 up to Level 2. Embedding English and Maths into Motor Vehicle Study - Resources 20/05/2010
Derby College
share materials created to support vocational tutors to embed english and maths.

The example activities provided here are related to Motor Vehicle Studies at Entry 3 and Level 1.
Learners are asked to plan and design their own light vehicle maintenance and repair business. Special consideration is given to H&S issues and the appropriate signage. English and Maths 'hints & tips' sheets support the activities.

Tresham Institute carried out an analysis of documentation used by Delos and designed a bespoke course, mapped to the National Literacy curriculum that covered report writing, form filling, accurate message taking and speaking at meetings, based on scenarios from Delos.

Before we began to teach, the company introduced us to the food processing plant. There we met many of the new students in their working environment. This was extremely useful as we were able to understand their language needs more fully.

Loughborough College worked with Hex Holdings and identified Numeracy skills such as costing/invoicing, calculating percentage discounts, ratios for mixing fillers/paints, metric units, understanding sales charts, as a priority for them. Company brochures, charts and other materials were used or adapted as teaching materials for the course and staff were supported to achieve the National Test.

Arriva working together with West Notts College to offer employees SfL opportunities 20/04/2005
No other bus companies within the East Midlands were encompassing the whole workforce within their development training. This support and training mechanism has proven a valuable asset to employees and the company, impacting significantly on the company’s bottom line and morale. This is evident throughout the company, for example at the Derby site the annual employee turnover has dropped from 12% to 2%.
